Rapport: - (REPORT - No. 1 Missing Research and Enquiry Unit, Royal Air Force, c/o British Forces in France. TARGET: JUVISY AIRCRAFT TYPE AND SERIAL NUMBER HALIFAX II NZ577 DATE REPORTED MISSING 8TH JUNE 1944 PLACE OF CRASH WITH MAP REFERENCE LIEUSAINT S8/S.1817 CREW: J86361 P/O M. MCLEAR (pilot) 1268145 F/S Connor, R.O. (WOP) 0886289 Lt. C.E. Evans (Nav) 1823828 Sgt. Vane, R. )FE) Safe J89258 P/O S.F. H Kelly (AB) J86372 P/O E.D. Woods (RAF) 1553115 F/S Angus, J.W. (MUAG) Safe RESULT OF INVESTIGATION AND FINDINGS: The above aircraft crashed in flames approximately one mile from LIEUSAINT in the night of 7/8th June 1944, Five members of the crew were killed. 2. Mr. GILQUIN, Cemetery Guardian of LIEUSAINT, states " I was at the scene of the crash in the morning of the 8th June, I saw the remains of four carbonised bodies in the wreckage. The Germans put these remains in two coffins, which I buried in LIEUSAINT Cemetery. About three weeks later, a fifth body was found in the wheat in a field. The Germans stripped it of papers, put it in a coffin which I buried in LIEUSAINT Cemetery. 3. Mr. MOUTIER, 68 Bis Rue de Paris, LIEUSAINT, sheltered for some time a member of the crew, F/Sgt ANGUS, but could give no information as to the identification of the graves. 4. Extensive investigation at LIEUSAINT, SOLERS AND VILLENEUVE-ST-GEORGES Cemeteries, at the American Graves Registration Command (VERSAILLES and ETAMPES) have established that: a) P/O MCLEAR and F/Sgt CONNOR are now buried in VILLENEUVE-ST-GEORGES (Old Cemetery) in a communal Grave No. 102 - This information was obtained from American filed. b) One of the two unknowns in grave 101 is P/O M.D. WOODS, the other being presumably either EVANS or KELLY. This information is taken from American burial reports. c) The fifth member of the crew, again EVANS or KELLY, is buried in a separate coffin, but extensive investigations have failed to reveal its whereabouts. 5. All the bodies buried in LIEUSAINT cemetery were disenterred by the Americans, taken to SOLERS, and thence mostly to VILLENEUVE-ST-GEORGES Cemetery. FINDINGS: 1. I have checked VILLENEUVE-ST-GEORGES Cemetery records, which agree with American Records on the following:- a) P/O McLEAR and F/S Connor are in grave 102 (OLD CEMETERY) b) P/O M.D. WOODS and one UNKNOWN are in 101 (OLD CEMETERY) 2. No trace can be found of the fifth member of the crew, but I have left the matter with our liaison Officer at A.G.RC. ETAMPES, F/LT LORD who is going to carry out a further search of AMERICAN RECORDS. 3. In the event of finding more information about the case whilst working in the SEINE ET MARNE area, we shall make a further report on it, 4. The graves have been registered by G.R.U. (Signed) R.L. CONCLUSIONS : 1.
